Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

This Blue Matcha Latte is a mild, but beautiful, creamy beverage. Subtle floral and herbal notes of the blue matcha pair with honey, vanilla, and creamy milk for a delicious drink to enjoy at any time of day.

Why This Blue Matcha Latte is SO Good:

  • Blue matcha is a very neutral, cozy drink, with subtle floral and herbal notes.
  • It doesn’t contain caffeine, so it’s not stimulating at all. (And the reason for this is because blue matcha isn’t actually matcha at all! It’s made from butterfly pea flowers. Check out this article on Blue Matcha from our sister site, Nutrition to Fit, to learn more about it!)
  • Research suggests that these butterfly pea flowers are anti-inflammatory with high amounts of antioxidants. Learn more about the research (with links to studies) in our NTF article on Butterfly Pea Tea: the Benefits of Blue Tea.
  • And of course, blue matcha lattes are quite beautiful and visually intriguing.

Ingredients You Will Need

ingredients to make a blue matcha butterfly pea flower latte
  • Butterfly Pea Flower Tea: the easiest place to find butterfly pea powder is Amazon. You can find butterfly pea tea with whole dried butterfly pea flowers, ground in tea bags, or (what I use in this recipe), a ground butterfly pea powder.
  • Hot Water: Bloom the tea in a bit of hot water first, before combining with milk.
  • Milk: Use whatever milk you like to drink!
  • Vanilla: a tiny touch of vanilla extract helps make this latte super cozy
  • Honey: for sweetness. Feel free to adjust to your tastes and use whatever sweetener you prefer. (If you need a non-nutritive sweetener, my favorite is allulose!)

Step-by-Step Directions

  1. Whisk or froth 2 teaspoons of dried, ground butterfly pea flowers with 1/4 cup hot water until the tea is fully dissolved.
  2. Add vanilla and honey and stir.
  3. Froth the warmed milk and pour it over the blue tea. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Expert Tips & Variations

  • Iced Blue Matcha Latte: For an iced latte, pour the sweetened blue tea (after step 2) over a glass of ice. Don’t warm or froth the milk and add directly to the iced glass. Stir and enjoy!
  • Sugar-Free Blue Matcha: Skip the honey and substitute your favorite sugar-free, non-nutritive sweetener, like allulose or stevia. Use an unsweetened variety of milk.
  • General Tip: be sure the tea has fully dissolved in the hot water before progressing with the rest of the latte! Especially if you’re making it iced, it’s harder to dissolve in cold water than it is hot.

FAQs

Does blue matcha contain caffeine?

No. Blue matcha doesn’t actually contain any matcha tea plant at all. It’s entirely made from the non-stimulating/ caffeine-free herbal tea of butterfly pea flowers.

Does it taste better hot or iced?

Your preference! I love the coziness of the warm latte in the evenings or in winter, but enjoying it iced is delicious on a warm day.

Is this the same thing as color changing blue tea?

Yes! To change the tea from blue to a more purple/ pink color, add something acidic, like lemon juice.
